It's all about engagement!

 Hi all, I hope you are well! Welcome back to the latest edition of my blog. This week I am going to talk about the "buzzword" in media and content creation in 2023. That word of course is engagement. What is engagement? Why is it so valuable? What techniques can be used to increase engagement? If those are questions that play on your mind on a daily basis you've certainly come to the right place! 👇

In the modern day your attention has become more valuable than ever for companies. I touched on why this is the case on my previous blog (feel free to check it out!), but essentially your attention is vital for advertisers to sell you products and for content creators to monetize their content.  The only way to get as much of your attention as possible is to keep you engaged. So what is engagement? Engagement is an umbrella term for actions that reflect an measure how much your audience interacts with your content. Whether it is a newspaper article, a blog or a Youtube video it is not always enough just to get your "click" from a flashy headline it is equally important to keep you interested in the content for as long as possible.

So how are you kept engaged. The average attention span in 2023 is ONLY 8.25 SECONDS, a number likely to get smaller. Content has to "get to the point" almost straight away as long-winded, drawn out pieces will simply lose the eyes of the public within seconds. Also, many people especially children will respond much more to visual items rather than words, that is why pictures and videos are almost more important than text. Lastly it is vital to encourage interaction from your readers, viewers etc. This may be through commenting, liking or sharing the content which will then force the algorithm to push your content to more people essentially creating a snowball effect.
